Recycling Food Storage--
an idea
Share old food storage before it expires
The concept of storing food and being
self-sufficient for a rainy day has been advised for many decades in some religious
cultures. Since early this century, the Mormons, for example, have been advised to store a
years supply of food.
They are also advised to rotate their food
storage: to eat what they store and then replenish their supplies.
In practice, however, this ideal is often
not achieved. Who wants to eat old food when newer food is available?
Furthermore, in a spirit of community, many Saints store far more than they themselves
would ever need.
A problem therefore arises, in that these
food stores end up surpassing their expiration date and go unused. This is
unfortunate, considering all the people who go hungry in this world, whose rainy day is
now.
The basic concept, therefore, is to rotate
food substantially before it expires, and donate it to charitable causes. Such
donations are tax-deductible, and they help ease the burden of want and starvation
throughout the world.
If the food expires in 10 years, donate it
after seven; receive the tax write-off, and procure more food to replenish the store.
